The «Bubble» Diary

For the first time in history, the Olympic Games were postponed due to a pandemic. «Tokyo 2020» now took place this summer - one year later than planned - and under extraordinary conditions: Almost no spectators were allowed at any competitions and the athletes of the participating nations remained practically among themselves by reason of the hygiene concept («bubble» concept) decided by the organising committee and the IOC. There were hardly any encounters, all contacts were reduced to the bare minimum due the Covid 19 pandemic.

The Keystone-SDA staff focused their reporting on the athletes from Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Like all journalists, they had to subordinate themselves to the strict hygiene concept and moved in a kind of parallel universe.

Our photographer Peter Klaunzer has made a photographic bubble diary that tells of a distant Tokyo, volunteers and Covid controls - an everyday life under the sign of the pandemic.
