National team arrives in California

In the spotlight

The Swiss national soccer team has arrived at its base camp in San Diego - only one person is missing: star forward Breel Embolo 'missed' the flight and was still in Switzerland at the time of publication.

In California, the national team continues its intensive preparation for the FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico starting June 11. The early arrival – eleven days before the first group match against Qatar on June 13 in the San Francisco Bay Area – is intended to give the players time to overcome jet lag and adapt to local conditions.

Keystone-SDA is live on site with text and images, documenting the entire journey as well as all matches from an exclusive Swiss perspective. For customized coverage, such as interviews in text and images, please contact our sports editorial team!

The eternal mystery of 'Waldeggli'

Flashback

Fifty years ago, on June 5, 1976, five members of the Siegrist and Westhäuser families were shot and killed in the 'Waldeggli' weekend home in Seewen (SO). The quintuple murder remains one of Switzerland's most high-profile unsolved crimes to this day. Despite extensive investigations and thousands of tips, the crime was never solved.

It was not until 1996, during renovation work in an apartment in Olten, that the suspected murder weapon was discovered. It was linked to a weapon owner who went into hiding and has been internationally wanted ever since. The statute of limitations for the case expired in 2006, leaving it a dark Swiss mystery.

By the numbers

Twenty-three years after the historic Evian summit, which was accompanied by massive protests, the heads of state and government of the major economic powers will meet again from June 15 to 17, 2026, in the city on the French shore of Lake Geneva.

Much has changed since 2003, not only for the participating states but also among anti-globalization activists - yet the visually palpable outrage and the massive security precautions in the border area remain.

We have compiled the events of 2003, as well as the preparations and initial demonstrations surrounding the "https://visual.keystone-sda.ch/lightbox/-/lightbox/page/2413646/1, in lightboxes.

Popular initiative for greater digital security

Insights

A new popular initiative aims to anchor digital security in Switzerland as a state duty in the Federal Constitution. The politically independent association Swiss Digital Pact wants to oblige the federal government to regulate binding security provisions for public and private actors in the digital space.

The initiators are reacting directly to recent severe cyberattacks, data misuse, and the rise of targeted disinformation. A new constitutional article is intended to protect sensitive data and critical infrastructure, as well as promote basic digital education in the country.

The signature collection phase runs until December 2, 2027.
